The "Who, What, When, Where, Why and How's" of Building a Business & Brand
By: J. A. Buie
Hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to start applying our “New Rules for the New Year” and are making a conscious effort to keep practicing and applying them to everyday life. If you haven’t had a chance, we’ve got you covered (see previous blog, 7 New Rules to Bring Into the New Year). Even though the reality of having a New President in office may still be fresh on your mind, (we’ll discuss the current state of the nation in a later blog), we want to continue to keep our focus on what’s important right now, and that is YOU. One thing I have learned over my 30 + something years on earth, is that YOU are the only person ultimately in control of YOUR life. The decisions you make in life today, effect how you live tomorrow. 2017 is “The Year of the Hustle” and the year that we are investing in ourselves. We are pursuing our PASSION, finding our PURPOSE, and focusing on our GRIND!
So about that business you decided you were going to start this year?! What steps have you made towards getting it started? Have you drafted your business plan yet? Secured your domain name for your website? Been to any networking or marketing events to begin establishing new business relationships? Remember that there are only 12 months in a year and well, January is over. You could always wait until next year, but… why? Don’t put off for tomorrow what you could have gotten accomplished today.
As a young woman who has also decided to switch career paths and pursue her dreams, I have began taking the necessary steps as well to join the millions of entrepreneurs in the world. I have drafted my business plan, launched my first business social media page (follow me on IG @InkedbyJess), and secured the domain name for my website. There are so many things that you must consider when starting a business. The thought of everything at once can be quite overwhelming. How do you even know where to begin? As someone who is also embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship this year, I came up with 6 questions that I believe are truly essential for every beginning business owner to ask themselves. Whether you are just starting a business or are in the process of re-vamping your current brand, these questions will provide you with some guidance and direction on where to begin your process with your business from writing books to opening your own pet store. Just like in grade school, when you had to analyze the who, what, when where, why and how of a story or essay, consider those questions and apply them to your business plan. As a matter of fact, think of your business like a story. When you look back at your business in 5, 10 or 15 years from now, what story do you want your business to tell?
WHO is your targeted audience/customer/client base? Think about the market or industry you are looking to infiltrate. Is there a specific age range, gender or even social class that you want to appeal to? Narrow it down. This will play a huge role in knowing how to market and advertise to your prospective clientele.
WHAT makes your business special and sets it apart from any other business similar to it in the market? What will make a person look at your brand/business and choose it over the next? What is your mission statement? What level of service are you willing to provide to make sure that people continue to patronize your business today, tomorrow and years to come?
WHEN can your audience/customer/client base expect you to provide them with the material/product you are promising? Have you provided and outlined timeframes or schedules for your services (i.e. shipping times, return/exchange deadlines, release dates etc.) Do you respond and/or communicate in a timely fashion? Remember that promptness matters andpeople will be more willing to do business with you if you are reliable.
WHERE can your audience/customer/client base reach/access the material/product/content you are providing and is it easily accessible for the demand or need you are serving? In this day and age, it’s all about convenience. Anything obtainable or accessible with the touch of a button on a cell phone is going to be first choice for the vast majority of people today. Remember, websites are your friends, but mobile apps are your soul mates.
WHY should people choose to support your business? Is there a special cause that your patrons will be contributing to when they support your business? Are you conveying this information to the masses? People may be more willing to support you when they know it’s for a good cause and you’re not just in the business to make a quick buck off of them.
HOW are you going to obtain and retain your targeted audience/customer/client bases service? What lengths are you willing to go to make sure your customers are 100% satisfied with your service? What are you doing to find out what ways you can improve and grow your brand or business? Are you conducting surveys? Are you showing your customers appreciation to make sure they not only keep coming back, but also are telling others about you? Word of mouth is the best referral, especially from a loyal and satisfied person.
Happy Business Building!!!
