7 New Rules to Bring into the New Year
By: J. A. Buie
The Year 2017 is upon us, and what better way to start the New Year than with a new set of rules to incorporate into your life and on your journey to greatness, excellence and success! And we aren’t just talking about those “New Year, New Me” resolutions that you make every year before the ball drops and the clock strikes 12:00, only to seemingly forget all about by Valentine’s Day leaving you doing one of the two or both of the following things; 1) making another idle promise to yourself to start over again the following new year because you were just not ready or had too much going on this time around to commit, or 2) wasting money on another new gym membership or business pyramid scheme, because well, you signed a contract! We’re not talking about another one of those types of years. This year, “The Year of the Hustle” we want you to think about long term goals. These rules are sure to help you grow internally as a person, focus on your inner “happy”, and teach you how to invest in yourself, as a brand, a business and future entrepreneur. So, I hope you’re ready! Get out your pen and paper and take notes, New Year, New Rules!
Rule # 1. Let Go!
Letting go is hard to do, but someone’s gotta do it, and that someone is you! The longer you hold on to your woes of the past, you become the “victim” and prevent yourself from becoming the “victor”. Whether it was yesterday, last week, last month, or 10 years ago, in order for you to catch the blessings that are to come your way in this new year (and the years to come,) you have to let go. That ex-boyfriend that cheated on you, LET IT GO! That best friend that betrayed you, LET IT GO! That family member that never paid you back the money you loaned them to get their car fixed (even though every time you see them they’re rocking something new or just got a fresh hair cut or do) LET IT GO! What’s in store for you this year is so much bigger than anything that has occurred in your past, trust me!
Rule# 2. Acceptance!
Now, once you’ve gotten Rule # 1 down, it’s time to move on to Rule # 2. Acceptance is a hard pill to swallow. You must understand that in life everything happens according to God’s divine order and when you do, you open yourself up to receive more of the blessings that he has in store for you. Trust his plan for your life and the journey designed specifically for you and have faith in his promise for an abundant life. Where you are today, is exactly where you are supposed to be, not a moment sooner or later, you are right on time. Yes, you could have done a thousand different things, a thousand different ways, but you didn’t. Accept what was and what is now.
Rule # 3. Forgiveness!
Forgiveness is not for the person that has wronged you, forgiveness is for you. It’s so you can move on and not harbor feelings of hurt, neglect or anger for the rest of your life. Those feelings rarely ever hurt the person that you hold them against, they only affect you. When you hold on to feelings of regret towards someone, you give them power over you and your life. It changes your mood and the energy you give off is different. You may not think they know, but those close to you can see it, and the person that has wronged you, is long gone with their life, probably not thinking about you. Whether you’ve received an apology or not, it’s time to forgive and move on.
Rule # 4. Pursue Your Passion!
If you could do one thing with the rest of your life and money or bills were not an issue, what would that thing be? That thing is your passion! A passion is something that you do that brings you joy and happiness and a sense of satisfaction from doing. It fulfills you and makes your feel whole. Everyone has a passion in life. Some have a knack for their passion because it may be a special talent or skill, others may have had to stumble across a couple of different endeavors before they find their passion. In this New Year, you should be doing more of what makes you happy and that means pursuing you! Whether it’s starting that non-profit organization, writing that book, or opening up that dance studio you’ve always dreamed of. Whatever it is, go for it! Don’t hold off another second. This is your year to do what you want to do, and not just what you have to do! A passion was once a dream waiting to become a reality, and you are the only person that can make that happen. Like they say, “When you do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life. “
Rule # 5. Find Your Purpose!
So, I know what you may be thinking, we just covered this, right? Wrong. Your passion is something that comes from within. It’s a talent or skill or something that you do to be fulfilled on the inside. But your purpose, your purpose is your reason. It's your reason for being. Have you ever wondered to yourself “Why am I here? Or “What was I put on this earth to do?”. If you are one of the lucky ones, your purpose often aligns with your passion in life, but don’t be disturbed if it doesn’t. Everyone has a purpose in life and sometimes that purpose is found just by talking to God and being still.
Rule # 6. Focus On Your Grind.
Now that you have a passion and a purpose, it’s time to put some action behind them and watch how they flourish. Start doing your research on purchasing that studio next to that donut shop you pass everyday on your way to work. Make your business plan. Go to networking events and make new connections with people in the same field as you and ask questions. Get your business cards together, build that website or start that social media page to get your name out there. Look into small business loans or large for that matter, hell, it really doesn’t matter! JUST DO SOMETHING! It’s time for you to grind! Remember that starting or building a business is just like walking, one step at a time. You didn’t know you could walk until you started, right?
Rule # 7. Hustle!
The most important rule of them all, HUSTLE! Don’t stop, don’t look back, and keep going until the end. Keep working on building your empire and watching your dreams come true and always remember that no one else in this world is going to hustle harder for you than you.
